"til we outnumber 'em

These are uncertain times we live in. As we approach this election on November 3, we might feel inadequate, thinking that each of us has only one vote. We might think that the forces arrayed against of are too powerful, too resistant to change. To you especially, I offer this Arlo Guthrie fable about the two rabbits:

“The mama rabbit and the papa rabbit was walkin’ around one day. And the hounds start comin’ after ’em. And they were runnin’ through the bush, and finally the rabbits end up in this big hollow log, and they can’t get out ’cause there’s dogs at either end. And the mama rabbit looks at the papa one, says, “Pop, this looks like it.” But he had a smile on his face and says, “Let’s just sit here ’til we outnumber ’em.

My message to all who think voting is an exercise in futility is to tell you we already outnumber ‘em. To those who advocate a return to normalcy and civility, we already outnumber ‘em. To those who seek fundamental change, we already outnumber ‘em. To those who worry that we could lose our democracy, we already outnumber ‘em.

If you don’t think that’s true, ask yourself a basic question: why is the other side working so hard to either suppress the vote or disqualify ballots already cast? It’s because they know we outnumber ‘em.

We can win if we just do one simple, important thing: show up and vote. The other side will try to pervert the law to destroy our democracy. But we have the one weapon to stop them and preserve, if not restore, traditional democratic principles and the rule of law: the vote. The old admonition holds true here: if you don’t use it, you’ll soon lose it.

But we only outnumber ‘em if we show up. It’s long been said that most success is the result of just showing up. Nowhere at no time in history is this any more true than it is in this election. Each of us owes it to ourselves, our families, our communities, and our country to show up and vote.

VOTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
